Year 2

Welcome to our Year 2 Page!

Hello and welcome to Year 2! In Year 2 Miss Davis and Mrs Ellis are your class teachers and Mrs Outram and Miss Carpenter are your teaching assistants. We have so many new and exciting things happening this year that we can’t wait to share with you. Our theme for this half term is Brilliant Beaches!

Autumn 1 – Brilliant Beaches

This half term, we’ll be learning all about the seaside. We’ll look at past and present and see how our grandparents used to enjoy their holidays and how they are different to today. We will also learn about the different creatures that live in the sea and how they are adapted to living there. To help us learn about the sea creatures we will be going on an exciting adventure to The Deep! We will become scientists to investigate water and look at floating and sinking. To continue our water experimenting we will look at how to measure accurately using measuring jugs and cylinders. We will also look at recycling and how we can help to keep our oceans safe. In maths we will spend lots of time learning place value and deepening our understanding of number. Throughout the half term we will be enjoying lots of stories about sea creatures starting with ‘The Tickly Octopus’ and ending with ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’, where we find out all about those sneaky seagulls! Our artwork will be focused around the different sea creatures and will be created using lots of different media.

Key Dates:

Everyday – Please make sure you have planners, reading books, spelling folders and water bottles.

Monday – Planner hand in date to check spellings and reading.

Tuesday – Indoor PE

Thursday – Outdoor PE

PE:

We have some fantastic coaches coming in to work with all classes- so that no one misses out, please make sure children have appropriate kits in school. We recommend that your child has their PE kit in school all week, just in case we manage to sneak an extra session in! We ask that you provide the correct outdoor kit including trainers and warm clothing as children will be doing outdoor PE with the coaches in all weather conditions.

Homework:

Our school target is to aim for all children to read at least three times a week, practice their spellings and times tables appropriate to their age. Please help your child to do this as all of these things are highly important and play a large role in helping your child to learn and progress. Spellings will be checked and tested regularly (please check your spelling folder for more information). Children also have weekly maths homework set on MyMaths (details in planner) and they can practice their times tables using TT Rockstars. In Year 2 we ask children to create projects for their homework on a half termly basis, giving you the opportunity to be creative and to promote a love of learning. On occasion, we may ask for children to complete a numeracy or literacy task, this will be communicated through dojo. Dojos will be awarded for all of the above.

What can you do to help your child prepare for their project?

Help your child to be creative and imaginative. Anything is possible! We would love to see your own ideas but alternatively look at the homework letter for our ideas. Children will be awarded dojos for any homework project they bring in to share with the class. Most importantly HAVE FUN!

Our door is always open and if you have any queries do not hesitate to come and chat with us or alternatively send us a dojo!
