Science in Y5

Class 12 have been investigating the fascinating 28-day cycle of the Moon and its different phases. To bring their learning to life, they got creative using Oreo biscuits, carefully modelling each stage of the cycle – from the New Moon through to the Full Moon and back again.

This hands-on activity not only helped them visualise and remember the sequence of lunar phases, but also developed a range of skills, including:

  • Scientific observation – identifying the key features of each phase
  • Recording and sequencing – understanding cyclical patterns in nature
  • Creativity and problem-solving – representing complex ideas in a practical and engaging way
  • Collaboration and discussion – working together to explain their models

The activity sparked curiosity and discussion about how the Moon’s movement affects our planet and gave students a deeper appreciation of the connections between science, nature, and everyday life.
