Mr Pedley Recommends ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl

This fabulous and famous story was a favourite of mine as a boy and I still enjoy reading it to the classes I teach today. George’s Marvellous Medicine is a wonderful book that can inspire some wonderful writing and drama.

Plot:
George is a young boy who lives at home with his parents and his nasty old Grandma. She is a horrible lady, who doesn’t have a nice word to say about anybody. One day, George’s parents leave him in the house and tell him he must give his Grandma her medicine at 11am. George’s Grandma continues to be nasty to him so he decides to teach her a lesson by making a most marvellous and magnificent medicine. George sets to work making his medicine by collecting anything and everything from around the house in order to cook up his magical creation. When the time comes, George’s gives the medicine to his Grandma with some very interesting side effects…

That’s not all, but I don’t want to give too much away because you need to read the whole book to find happen what happens to George’s Grandma.

However, this book does come with a warning: ‘’Do not try to make George’s Marvellous Medicine yourselves at home. It could be dangerous.’’

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do and for something different try watching Rik Mayall’s famous Jackanory reading of George’s Marvellous Medicine.
